PRESENTATIONS/PUBLICATIONS
I have presented papers at many national and international meetings, including three British Orthopaedic Association meetings and European Federation of Orthopaedics Rehabilitation and Trauma meetings in Europe. I have published in major orthopaedic journals including the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. I continue to undertake and supervise research in knee surgery and trauma, particularly whiplash injury.
SUMMARY
I decided to join the Royal Air Force as a medical cadet. During my 16 years within the Air Force I worked as a unit medical officer, in general surgery and finally orthopaedic units as a registrar/senior registrar. I have had extensive and wide ranging experience from major national and international orthopaedic units. I have developed a particular interest in knee and spine surgery but consider myself to be a general orthopaedic surgeon.
As part of my orthopaedic career I was given the opportunity to travel the world. This included working as a general surgeon for the British Forces in Cyprus and Belize, as well as working in a field hospital environment on several occasions. I was the official trauma surgeon to the Isle of Man TT and Grand Prix racing.
On becoming a consultant I began a practice in medico-legal work, and this has built up over the years. I have now prepared over 2,000 medico-legal reports, mostly concerning road traffic accidents, but increasingly over the last two-three years I have also been involved in negligence cases, and this now numbers over 100. I undertake both plaintive and defendant work which over the last year has averaged 70% and 30% respectively. Since 2006 I have become increasingly involved in consultant advisor work to Ramsay Healthcare UK undertaking review of mal-practice cases, initial assessment and appointment of overseas surgeons to the UK ISTC centres and continuing appraisal/assessment of consultant colleagues within the Private Care network for revalidation and re-certification.
I have been extensively involved in academic work, both publishing and presenting and also more recently organising courses both national and regional, concerning general orthopaedics, trauma and sports medicine, and medico-legal seminars
.I am eager to maintain my up to date knowledge and research in orthopaedics and the links on this page show some of the meetings I have attended as a delegate, courses I have attended as an instructor or member of the faculty, and finally meetings I have organised and run myself.
