Welcome to the Web Site of Mr Gordon Varley, consultant in orthopaedics and trauma surgery specialising in joint replacement, spinal surgery and trauma.  I became an accredited orthopaedic consultant in 1992 following initial training in both The Royal Air Force and the National Health Service.   I have studied  extensively around the world including America, Australia, Germany and Cyprus, and undertook specialist training in the UK mostly at Nottingham.  I have had extensive experience in sports injuries, particularly the use of ligament reconstruction of the knee, trauma surgery, battle field surgery scenarios. For  three years I was the trauma surgeon to the Isle of Man TT races.  I have interests in the field of spinal surgery, particularly whiplash injuries and in lower limb surgery particularly arthroscopic work and joint replacement.

I now work purely in the private sector. However, I continue to treat NHS patients undertaking work for Primary Care Trusts ( Choose and Book, and Extended Choice Network Schemes) and NHS Hospital Trusts undertaking waiting list initiative work, both inpatient and outpatients. These treatments are funded by the NHS and are undertaken in the private Fitzwilliam Hospital. I undertake ongoing research and have published widely in the past on topics such as treatment of long bone fractures, whiplash injuries of the neck, arthroscopy of the knee, trauma patterns in motor cyclists and direct access treatment pathways for patients in the National Health Service.

I have full time secretarial support for my private practice and NHS initiative work. I undertake regular continuing professional development courses in spinal surgery, knee surgery, hip surgery. I regularly teach on courses giving training to junior surgeons and also train non hospital specialists such as GPs, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and osteopaths in the region. I undertake courses on average every six months.

In the last two years I have worked as a consultant advisor to private healthcare groups, particularly Ramsay Healthcare UK, helping to appoint overseas surgeons for independent sector treatment centres. I also undertake work supervising overseas surgeons in their induction period to UK practice, both out-patient and in theatre. I carry out appraisals of consultant surgeon colleagues to assess and advise on their work to comply with GMC revalidation procedures and help colleagues formulate job plans and career progression.

I am a keen golfer and am secretary of the local Fitzwilliam Hospital Golf Society.
